The
Hem of His Garment by Dr. John Garr
As you read this
volume, you'll be simply amazed at just how Jewish
Jesus really was! You'll also be enriched by a
comprehensive understanding of spiritual lessons
found in biblically Hebraic dress. The story in
Matthew 9 is not just an isolated, one-of-a-kind
event in the life of Jesus, a time when one lone
woman reached out and touched the hem of his garment
to be healed. Hidden from the eye of the reader
of these stories is an enriching key to understanding
what actually happened on these days of deliverance.
Most versions of the Bible tell us that she touched
the "hem of his garment"1 or the "border of his
garment"2 or the "edge of his cloak"3 or the "fringe
of his cloak."4 None of these translations, however,
adequately conveys one important detail of the
event. Without this detail, we simply miss the
richness of this event and of an entire tradition
in biblical history. This

Discovering
the Bible: Jesus in Galilee by
Victoria Parker, Janet Dyson
The bible is perhaps the most
influential book in the history of the world,
and every child should be familiar with its timeless
stories. These new books bring them to children
everywhere in an accessible, lively, informative
fashion and are invaluable additions to every
home library.
The
Jesus I Never Knew by Philip Yancy,
Philip Yancey realized that despite
a lifetime attending Sunday school topped off
by a Bible college education, he really had no
idea who Jesus was. In fact, he found himself
further and further removed from the person of
Jesus, distracted instead by flannel-graph figures
and intellectual inspection. He determined to
use his journalistic talents to approach Jesus,
in the context of time, within the framework of
history. In The Jesus I Never Knew, Yancey
explores the life of Jesus, as he explains, "'from
below,' to grasp as best I can what it must have
been like to observe in person the extraordinary
events unfolding in Galilee and Judea" as
Jesus traveled and taught. Yancey examines three
fundamental questions: who Jesus was, why he came,
and what he left behind. Step by step, scene by
scene, Yancey probes the culture into which Jesus
was born and grew to adulthood; his character
and mission; his teachings and miracles; his legacy--not
just as history has told it, but as he himself
intended it to be. Hardcover - 288 pages (September
1995). Zondervan Publishing House; ISBN: 0310385709.

The
Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah
by Alfred Edersheim
Available
online! Alfred Edersheim's heritage as a Messianic
Jew gives the description of Jewish culture in
"The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah"
an authenticity that a non-Jew would be hard-pressed
to duplicate. The culture of Israel during the
Roman occupation comes alive in Edersheim's writing
in a way that goes beyond scholastic study by
blending his own Jewish heritage, archeological
fact, and keen spiritual insight. Any serious
student of the Gospels or the Epistles would benefit
from the insight of Mr. Edersheim because so much
of the imagery in the account of Jesus is steeped
in the culture of Israel as it progressed from
Abraham to Herod. Used as a reference, "The
Life and Times" is indexed according to verses
and events and gives Bible studies the context
for the illustrations of Jesus. Read as a book,
Edersheim is ponderous, however, a contiguous
reading would give a person a consistent Hebrew
framework which the New Testament fit into 2000
years ago. Hardcover - 1109 pages New Updtd
edition (April 1997). Hendrickson Publishers,
Inc.; ISBN: 0943575834
The
Bible Jesus Read by Philip Yancey
Philip Yancey has a way of confronting
our most cherished--but misguided--notions about
the Christian life. In his newest book, Yancey
challenges the perception that the New Testament
is more important than the Old, that the Hebrew
Scriptures aren't worth the time they take to
read and understand them. Writing as always with
keen insight into the human condition and God's
provision for it, Yancey debunks this theory once
and for all. Yes, he agrees, the Old Testament
can be baffling, boring, and even offensive to
the modern reader. But as he personally discovered,
the Old Testament is full of rewards for the one
who embraces its riches. With his candid, signature
style, Yancey unfolds his interactions with the
Old Testament from the perspective of his own
deeply personal journey. From Moses, the amazing
prince of Egypt, to the psalmists' turbulent emotions
and the prophets' oddball rantings, Yancey paints
a picture of Israel's God--and ours--that fills
in the blanks of a solely New Testament vision
of the Almighty. As he reconnects for us the strong,
sinuous chords that bind Old and New Testaments,
Yancey reclaims the Reformers' deep sense of unity
between the two. Most important, he says, reading
the Scriptures that Jesus so revered gives believers
a profound new understanding of Christ, the Cornerstone
of the new covenant. The more we comprehend the
Old Testament, Yancey writes, the more we comprehend
Jesus. (July 1999) Zondervan Publishing House;
ISBN: 0310228344.
Jesus

R. Wilson, David Wolpe
Brad Young is one of my favorite authors. This
book is a must have if you are studying Hebraic
roots. Jesus the Jewish Theologian establishes
Jesus firmly within the context of first-century
Judaism and shows how understanding Jesus' Jewishness
is crucial for interpreting the New Testament
and for understanding the nature of Christian
faith. Paperback - 308 pages (November 1995) Hendrickson

Twelve
Words Jesus Knew by Irene Lipson
Imagine learning Hebrew and learning
about the character of God at the same time! Irene
Lipson accomplishes this feat through an in-depth
study of twelve Hebrew words spoken by Yeshua.
These words, including Berith (covenant), Shabbat
(Sabbath) and Torah (direction), illustrate God's
relationship with his people and introduce us
to the world of Jewish religious thought and practice.
She then points us towards a life-style shaped
by our relationship with the God whom these words
reveal. The book provides a highly enriching view
of the continuity of Christianity with Jewish
faith and the ways in which Jesus developed our
understanding of God. This is an excellent, enriching
book with a great deal of depth. Monarch Books,
1998, 224 pages. 1854244256.

Jesus
In His Jewish World
Drawing upon the very latest biblical
research, Dwight A. Pryor opens up the Gospels
to wonderfully new and inspiring insights into
the life of our Lord. A picture is drawn of the
historical Jesus, living in the land of Israel
and within the Jewish culture of the first century,
that dramatically illuminates the method and meaning
of his teachings. Filmed at an Anglican church
near London, this series builds upon and extends
the teachings found in the audio series, Our Hebrew
Lord. Seven 60-min messages on four videos.
Eyewitness
to Jesus
A pursuit of fragment of papyrus
that has recently been re-discovered could be
the link that can date the Gospel of Matthew all
the way back to a time contemporary to the life
of Jesus. The implications of archaeological evidence
such as this could have an enormous impact on
the scientific community as well as the religious
community. The Gospel of Matthew may have been
written by someone who actually witnessed events
in the life of Jesus, a possible eyewitness to
the last supper and perhaps even the crucifixion.
Matthew D'Ancona of Magdelen College in Oxford
travels from Egypt to the Holy Land in the evidence
that can prove that this papyrus was written during
the life and times of Jesus. 100 minutes.
